Weekly Fic Discussion

Welcome again to [community profile] kpop_fic! It's so so exciting to see so many different people joining in this community and sharing fics!

One idea [personal profile] arundels and I also had for this community was to have some regular discussion posts so that people have a chance to chat. So, here is our first Weekly Fic Discussion post!

This post can be used for any kind of fic discussion you want, but will also have a few prompt questions each week. We'll try to target both writers and readers with the prompt questions. You can reply to all of them, one of them, or none of them if you have something else you want to talk about!

Feel free to post WIP snippets, ask others' opinion on characterization, share a clip that has broken your brain, etc.!

This week's prompt questions:

  • How did you get into reading/writing K-pop RPF?

  • What is your platonic ideal of a K-pop fic (e.g. the elements you usually gravitate towards)?

Honestly one of the most shocking things is not only are there so many more groups now, but they all produce so much content! It feels a bit funny or quaint now, but I really did get into because I loved the music! I was really into the EDM/maximalist pop of the early 2010s and the experimental things K-pop did with that genre (and pop music in general) really drew me in. Then adding stuff like concepts and performances and fanservice really scratches the part of my brain that cares about real and fake and why does it matter.

Fame on steroids is a great way of putting it! It's fun getting to explore that through RPF now.

Honestly the content overload is both a blessing and a curse! I remember being really into 2ne1 and just watching this one particular dance practice video over and over and over again cos there was almost nothing else... Whereas now I don't think I could consume all the content for even ONE group let alone the many many many that I like and follow. Agree though that as great as the content is, in a way the music does come first - though I think for a genre like kpop the performances are quite deeply tied up into that! It's hard for me to have any real investment in a group if I don't at least enjoy their music, the content is all ancillary stuff that needs to support the music :)

Yes, this was also the thing with SM, though I think with them it was about preserving the idol image and not letting see behind the metaphorical curtain. It blew my mind when I realised SM groups had stuff like recording behinds now because that so antithetical to the SM I remembered!

And the music definitely comes first for me as well - I need to enjoy the music to be able to really get invested in a group and their performances or content, but there is truly so much content now (most company variety shows aren't my thing, so that helps lol)
